Battery Charging Repair

The battery is an important part of the charging and starting system of your car. In the starting system, it sends current of electricity to start and run your car. The battery also supplies electricity to radio, lights and other systems when the vehicle is off. Most of the vehicles have only one battery. However, electric vehicles and vehicles with diesel engines require two or more batteries. SLI (Starting, Lighting and Ignition) battery is a type of battery widely used in vehicles.

How does a car battery work?

A battery converts chemical energy into electricity. It consists of cells in which chemical energy is stored. A lead-acid chemical reaction takes in the SLI battery of your car. This battery powers engine, lights and accessories of your car by providing short bursts of energy. After it has started the engine, power comes from alternator.

Working of car battery

There are six cells in an SLI battery each cell having two plates. One plate is made of lead and the second plate is made of lead oxide. Each cell produces 2-volts of energy. As there are six cells, your car’s battery produces 12-volts of energy.

Both plates are submerged in sulphuric acid. This acid triggers a chemical reaction between both plates. Sulphuric acid triggers the lead dioxide plate to produce ions and lead sulfate. These ions react to the other plate and produce hydrogen and lead sulfate. This leads to the production of electrons which race around plates. This movement of electrons generates electricity. We use this electricity to start the engine, and run lighting, radio and other systems in the car.

How much does it cost to replace car battery?

The labor cost of battery replacement is often less than 30$ dollars. The actual replacement cost of battery depends on your car and the quality and brand of the battery.
