The spark required to ignite this mixture comes from the ignition coil through the spark wire. Most of the cars have a single wire per cylinder. However, there are some models having two spark plugs and two spark wires per cylinder.

Heat, oil, and many other forces inside the car engine can cause the spark plug to wear out. A high-quality spark plug can last for 100,000 miles.

How long can a spark plug last?

  • A standard copper plug can last between 10,000 and 20,000 miles.
  • A platinum spark plugs can last more than 60,000 miles.
  • An iridium spark plug can last over 120,000 miles.

Should Engine Knocking Or Pinging Sound Cause A Concern?

Is your car engine making metallic knocking, rattling or pinging noise? You can hear this sound when you accelerate the engine of your car moderately or heavily. The engine can also make this knocking and pinging sound when it is near or it reaches the normal operating temperature.

Very similar to pre-ignition, an engine spark knock is an erratic form of combustion. Too much heat, compression or both lead to engine spark knock. If you notice knocking, pinging or rattling sound coming from the engine, most probably it is because of engine spark knock. So, engine spark knock occurs whenever the pressure in the combustion chamber is high. This can break rings, blow the head gasket, flatten your rod bearings or/and crack piston lands.
