Lighting & Wipers

It is important to see and be seen on the road. It is not possible to drive safely without maintaining optimal visibility. A misbehaving lighting or wiper system always increases the risk of accidents. The wiper system removes water, dirt or snow accumulated on the windshield of your vehicle. The lighting system provides you with the visibility you need to drive at night. Interior lighting, dashboard instrument visibility and indicators used to alert other drivers about your next action (stop or intention to turn left or right) also depend on the same system.

FAQs for Lighting & Wipers services

Family Car Care is pleased to offer answers to some of the frequently asked questions about the lighting & wipers services offered at our business in Parkville.

When to replace windshield wiper blades?

Windshield wipers are made from degradable rubber which becomes less effective over time. So, you should change these blades every 6-12 months. You should inspect wiper blades regularly and look for the signs of deterioration. Blades of the wiper system are deteriorated due to everyday wear and tear, weather, UV rays and the washer fluid you have mixed in the water. Blades become brittle with time. Following are the signs indicating that it’s time to replace windshield wiper blades:

  • Streaking
  • Smearing
  • Squeaking
  • Chattering

Rubber is hardened/cracked due to exposure to UV rays, tree sap and other factors. Every Time the blade wipes, it leaves bands of water.

The edge of the wiper loses its sharpness and becomes rounded due to wear. This causes smearing which results in impaired and cloudy visibility.

Old/worn out rubber on the blades makes a sound while moving across the windshield.

Not using for an extended period or exposure to cold and hot temperatures can make the blades vibrate and skip across the windshield.

How To Polish Your Headlights?

Plastic used in car headlights often become cloudy and lose its shine over time. Polycarbonate plastic can tolerate the harsh road conditions but not the UV rays. The UV protective film applied on the plastic is deteriorated with time. Headlights becoming yellowish indicates that the plastic is being oxidized. However, you can clean headlights using a headlight restoration kit.

  • Use a painter’s tape around the headlight to protect the paint and then sand the lens.
  • Dry the headlights.
  • Squeeze polish onto a dry and clean microfiber towel.
  • Rub in the polish in a circular motion for a few minutes.
  • Wax the lens.
  • Apply UV sealant.
